The charms of Renaissance

The Renaissance château in Horšovský Týn is one residence where an unusual number of interiors are accessible. In the main season, you can choose from several guided tours, with a total duration over seven hours. While some people like the castle part with the unique, Early-Gothic chapel, an armoury and furnished Renaissance housing, or the representative halls, others prefer the area below the castle and the servants’ rooms. You can see, for example, the uniforms of the château butlers, as well as items that servants could not do without.

A Japanese princess in West Bohemia

One of the guided tours introduces Duchess Mitsuko Coudenhove-Kalergi, a Japanese woman who lived in Bohemia at the turn of the 20th century. Mitsuko Aoyama, a daughter of a Tokyo antiquities dealer, married Duke Heinrich Coudenhove-Kalergi in 1895, who worked in Japan as an Austrian-Hungarian consul. It was not easy for them; she had to convert to Christianity, while he had to give up his diplomatic career. Together, they settled down at a château in Poběžovice.

To the château park for romance

Take a bird’s eye view at Horšovský Týn from the tower of the Church of St Peter and St Paul; you will also see the large château park, open to the public, with a cascade of ponds, many romantic nooks and several other structures; follow the educational Royal Ravine trail that will take you to all the interesting sites. Popular destinations in the surroundings also include the lookout tower at Šibeniční hill, to which an educational trail from town will take you, and the Radbuza River, navigable for 66 kilometres if you don’t mind carrying the boat over the numerous weirs.
