Seeberg (often called Ostroh) can be found a few kilometres west of Františkovy Lázně. Today’s castle is formed by a Romanesque and Gothic palace, complemented with a Renaissance wing with a beautiful arcade hallway. Entering the basement of the castle is also an adventure.
Seeberg is one of the oldest castles in the Cheb Region. It was built during the German colonization of the Cheb area at the end of the 12th century by one of the Ministeriales – unfree servants of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. After it was annexed to Bohemia, Charles IV gave the castle to the town of Cheb in 1349. Today, Seeberg belongs to Františkovy Lázně.
Visitors can enjoy the large expositions on the history of the caste, the black kitchen, and an exhibition on “The Life of a Porcelain Cup”. The spaces of the timbered Baroque barn, outhouse and a tower granary in the outer ward are dedicated to folk culture, farming and the crafts of the Cheb countryside in the 19th century. In the summer, Seeberg Castle regularly livens up with the traditional historical fair, or the Wine Festival, first organized in 2015.
