Why visit

J. W. Goethe, who liked to stay in Cheb and in the neighbouring Mariánské Lázně, considered the strange castle tower from black lava stone a work of old Romans. Though he was mistaken, the tower is the oldest structure of the historic town. The Emperor Fridrich I Barbarossa built the Romanesque falce type castle in the 12th century.
