One of the landmarks of Brno’s central Svobody Square is the Bank of Moravia, which was finished in 1930. What is so interesting about it are the nearly identical suspended glass frontages oriented towards the streets. They are connected by a passage, which contains shops and restaurants.
The authors of the building are Ernst Wiesner and Bohuslav Fuchs.
Does the name Bohuslav Fuchs ring a bell? No wonder – you can come across many of his buildings in Brno but he is well-known in all of Central Europe too. When it comes to the Bank of Moravia building, he is credited mainly for the outside of the building. The load-bearing ferro-concrete pillars are drawn into the interior and the entrance hall and the staircase are covered with white marble. The bank still serves its original purpose and the two uppermost floors have flats for rent. The construction of such multipurpose buildings was strongly supported by the city at that time, as they enriched the city’s cultural sphere and helped deal with the housing crisis.
