Visit a site of the Baroque period unique in Central Europe. The Baroque cemetery with a monumental chapel and rich sculptural decoration, built between 1730 and 1743, is considered to be a jewel of Baroque architecture and sculpture thanks to its original concept.
The Baroque cemetery near Kroměříž in Moravia was built in the 1730s and 1740s as a generous complex lavishly decorated with sculptures such as angels, allegories of virtues, good deeds and the seven deadly sins.
Covering an area of approximately 2000 m2 it has a square ground plan. As is typical for Baroque architecture, the squares in the corners have been replaced with arches vaulted inside. The entire cemetery is constructed on an embankment on a slope near the church and is therefore elevated above the surrounding land. Enclosing the cemetery, the massive wall made of sandstone blocks is between three and ten metres high. It is decorated with a balustrade with pedestals for small sculptures and statuettes fitted all around its circumference.
