Janáček Theatre in Brno

From the early 20th century, the Czech inhabitants of Brno strove for a representative Czech theatre scene and they were not successful until 1965. That year the theatre was honoured to be named after a great artist whose life and work is linked with Brno. This was the birth of the Janáček Theatre.

The majestic functionalist building, partially surrounded by the city park, was built and equipped mainly for great operas and ballet performances from the classical as well as modern repertoire. The auditorium is arranged as a stepped amphitheatre fringed by an annulus of boxes with an impressive overall capacity of 1055 seats. The theatre is the largest memorial to Leoš Janáček. A statue of him looks down on the visitors in front of the theatre’s main entrance.
