The New Jewish Cemetery in Plzeň
The New Cemetery, the third established in Plzeň, lies on the very outskirts of the city. Alongside a great number of historic tombstones it features a symbolic memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. Above all, however, it is an ideal spot for contemplation, reflection and rest.
The New Jewish Cemetery was established in 1898 when the older cemetery’s capacity could no longer meet the demands of the Jewish community. It lies around 4 kilometres east of the main square, directly opposite the central municipal cemetery. On an area measuring over 2,000 m², it contains over two thousand graves. A gravedigger’s house and ceremonial hall stood there until 1988 when they were knocked down as part of a road-building project. Nevertheless the cemetery is an enormously inspiring place with an unrepeatable atmosphere that has to be experienced at first hand. Alongside the graves you can take in a black granite memorial by the northern wall dedicated to the more than 3,000 victims of the Holocaust from Plzeň. Nearby stands a smaller memorial to 18 victims of a death march in 1945. Burials are still conducted at the cemetery.
