Břeclav Synagogue
New spirit in an old building
The synagogue in Břeclav was used for religious purposes until the beginning of the Nazi occupation, then for half a century it served as a warehouse. Today, after a through and exacting reconstruction, it serves as an art gallery, concert hall and venue for social events.
In the Břeclav Synagogue there is also a new permanent exhibition on the history of the local Jewish community, which was one of the largest in Moravia and, as elsewhere, perished during the Second World War. Its opening to the public and the unveiling in the entry hall of the synagogue of a stone memorial plaque to Břeclav’s exterminated Jewish population took place on 28 September 2000. In the former women’s gallery upstairs there is a permanent exhibition titled “Jewish Břeclav”.
