Visit Czech Spas for Relaxation and Better Health
The Czech countryside has many unique features, one of them being spas. It is hard to find a region that does not have a spa, no matter how small. Moreover, using natural resources for treatment has a long tradition. Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně are well known abroad, but in this piece we’ll take a look at spas that are not as famous and as such offer more peace and quiet, along with trips to interesting places and hikes.

Janské Lázně – the only spa in Krkonoše

The Krkonoše Mountains, the highest mountain range in the Czech Republic, not only provides fresh mountain air, but also thermal water with beneficial effects. This spa, nestled in a countryside that is an oasis of peace and unspoiled nature, has been popular since the 17th century. The treatments focus treating the musculoskeletal system, oncological patients, and people with breathing difficulties. If you visit Janské Lázně, you will enjoy its location in the middle of the mountains, offering sport entertainment all year round: hiking in summer, skiing in winter. In the summer, you can visit the popular local moorland where you will feel as if you’re in the middle of a Nordic tundra. But even more picturesque destinations are close at hand. Hike up Mount Sněžka or visit the Mumlavské Waterfalls, whether in winter or summer. And golf fans can enjoy the golf course in Mladé Buky.

Karlova Studánka – the mountain spa with the cleanest air

A spa with clean air unlike anywhere else in the Czech Republic is located in a scenic valley in the very heart of the Jeseníky Mountains. According to some measurements, the air there is the cleanest in all of central Europe! The Karlova Studánka Spa is also the highest spa in the country and so has plenty of mountainous appeal. The local architecture is splendid. The wooden homes combine elements of folk, classicist, and imperial architecture. The mineral springs and the clear air have been used since the 18th century to treat respiratory illnesses, diabetes, and various nervous system ailments. And what is there to visit in the surroundings? There is an educational trail along the Bílá Opava River that goes through primeval forests with a lot of rapids and waterfalls, and it can only be hiked thanks to bridges and ladders. It is also worth setting off on longer hikes – for example, you can hike up to the lookout point on the rock called Rolandův kámen, or the highest mountain in Moravia: Praděd. The interesting romantic castle of Sovinec, the largest castle compound in Moravia is also well worth a visit.

Teplice – the oldest spa in Central Europe

The city of Teplice, on the border between North and West Bohemia, lies in the shadows of the Krušné Mountains, has had a famous history. The spa was visited by kings and emperors. But it does not only benefit from its history: it is now a modern spa, and if you suffer from backaches and joint pain, you will feel like a king there. The water that used to treat Romans and Celts is now used to treat musculoskeletal ailments, including rheumatism, osteoporosis, and arthrosis; nervous and vascular illnesses; backaches and headaches; and multiple sclerosis. There are many places to visit while staying there. Nearby, there is the town of Duchcov. The local palace is linked to Giacomo Casanova, who lived there for thirteen years and also died there. Moreover, the Krušné́ Mountains are abundant with hiking and cycling trails, as well as historic mining shafts.

Třeboň Spa – mud baths in the Region of Two Skies

The South Bohemian spa in Třeboň lies in the region of hundreds of ponds and centuries-old dams. At the end of the 19th century, the locals started to use the mud, which boasts a high peat content, therapeutic purposes. The Třeboň spa treats disorders of the musculoskeletal system, rheumatic diseases, post-injury and post-surgery conditions, arthrosis, rheumatism, osteoporosis, and gout. The spa guests have numerous opportunities of entertainment and trips in their free time. There is a large Renaissance chateau and a beautiful Baroque square in the town. You can explore the land of lakes and deep woods on a bike. And if you prefer chateaus and castles, you simply must see the chateau in Hluboká or Červená Lhota.

Velké Losiny – a scenic thermal spa

The small town of Velké Losiny can be found in the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains in the north of Moravia. The most valuable feature of the local springs is their composition and temperature: their concentration of curative elements is so high that it makes them one of the highest-quality sulphurous springs in the Czech Republic. The spa treats neurological as well as skin ailments, including psoriasis, atopic eczema, and acne. In the centre of the town, there is a Renaissance chateau with three-storey-high arcades surrounded by a spacious chateau park. Velké Losiny also have another prominent tradition – a handmade paper mill. The 16th-century mill is still operational, and you are welcome to visit! The countryside surrounding the spa is also interesting – you can go on a hike along the Červenohorské Saddle, or check out the Bílá Opava waterfalls.
