Where to Run: Criss-Crossing Czechia
Czechia offers countless options for all running enthusiasts. Whether you are looking for city parks, picturesque routes along rivers, or a challenging mountain trail, you will find what you are looking for in Czechia. In Prague, you can enjoy Stromovka, Petřín, or Letná Park, where even digital nomads can make the most of their workouts. For longer runs, you can choose a route along the Vltava or Elbe rivers. And if you prefer running in the mountains, try the Brdy or Jeseníky Mountains! An interesting tip is an early morning run at sunrise through the quiet historic centres of towns.

Prague’s parks attract both locals and tourists for a run.

Prague offers more than just historical landmarks—it also boasts fantastic parks that every runner will appreciate. If you are looking for a flat surface and long straight paths, Stromovka is the obvious choice. Petřín Gardens will delight those who want to add some hills to their training plan, while Letná Park not only provides a great running experience but also one of the best views of Prague. For those who want to share their passion with others, regular training sessions are available as part of Mattoni FreeRun ⬈.

Along the Rivers Towards an Endless Horizon

Czechia is home to many beautiful and wide rivers, making riverside running a truly special experience. The Elbe Trail, primarily used by cyclists, stretches from the river’s source to the Bohemian Switzerland region. It offers long routes ideal for endurance runners, whether you choose the Krkonoše Mountains, the Polabí region, or North Bohemia. Around České Budějovice in South Bohemia, you can enjoy a scenic route to Hluboká Castle and back along the Vltava River, where you will encounter historic panoramas and old tree-lined avenues. The route is over 20 km long and mostly follows paths away from the roads.

Mountain Trails: A Tough Run with a Reward

If you are looking for a challenge, head to the mountains. Among Czech runners, the Brdy, České Středohoří, and Jeseníky Mountains are popular choices. Brdy is an ideal option for those who want to combine an unusual terrain with fascinating history—you will be running through a former military area that was closed to the public for most of the 20th century.

In the Jeseníky Mountains, the trails around the Dlouhé Stráně pumped-storage reservoir are particularly favoured. This route is demanding, but it rewards runners with the sight of an iconic water reservoir and breathtaking panoramas. Both locations offer high-quality running surfaces, and you will not have to weave through crowds of tourists.

Trails through the České Středohoří region are also almost empty, but be prepared for some serious elevation gain! While these are not the highest mountains, you will encounter plenty of hills with stunning steep slopes.

Historic Centres: Running Away from the Crowds

Would you like to experience Brno, Olomouc, or Ostrava in a different way? Set off for a morning run at sunrise! You will have the city almost to yourself, encountering only a few early risers while enjoying the charm of empty streets.

Brno city centre is great for both short and long runs. Head towards Špilberk Castle, where you can tackle a steep hill—your reward will be a stunning view over the entire city. If you prefer flatter routes, try running along Masarykova Street towards St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral and back to Lužánky—the oldest public park in Czechia.

Olomouc boasts a beautiful historic centre as well as scenic park routes. Start your morning run near the Holy Trinity Column, jog across the Upper Square, and make your way to Bezruč Park, where you will find pleasant running paths surrounded by greenery. If you enjoy running along a river, try the route along the Morava River towards Olomouc Castle and St. Wenceslas’ Cathedral.

And last but not least, Ostrava may surprise you with its variety of running trails. We recommend a route from Dolní Vítkovice, a former industrial complex transformed into a cultural hub, towards Komenský Park. This park offers excellent conditions for a peaceful run along the Ostravice River, allowing you to enjoy a green oasis in the heart of the city.
