The Slovanský Island – also known as Žofín (Sophie’s Island) after the Archduchess Sophie of Austria, the mother of Emperor Franz Joseph I – has gradually become an important centre of Prague’s social and cultural life.
The current building was erected in 1884 after the island was bought by the municipality. The Žofín Island and its splendid Neo-Renaissance palace constituted the city’s cultural centre until the time the Municipal House was built and to this day they host many important events.
