The Vimperk Chateau, proudly soaring above the town and River Volyňka, was built in the place of a castle from the 13th century. The chateau consists of three parts – the oldest part is the castle (Upper Chateau), then there is the Lower Chateau, and the third part is the Haselburg artillery bulwark of 1479 with remains of the walls.
The chateau was last reconstructed after a fire in 1857, by the last owners from the Schwarzenberg family. In 2015, the chateau was taken over by the National Heritage Institute, which accepted it in very bad condition, caused by long-term lack of maintenance.
IMPORTANT NOTICE – The National Vimperk Chateau is currently undergoing an extensive reconstruction. The project for the reconstruction of the Upper Chateau and the Regional Museum of Vimperk is planned for 2018 – 2021. Operation is largely limited during the reconstruction and visitors are only admitted to the Lower Chateau tours. The chateau courtyards are not accessible during the reconstruction (2018 – 2021).
The operation is provisional. The chateau is open without a cash desk or souvenir shop and there is also no WC with running water available. This year, the chateau will only be accessible from July to September when there will be a mobile WC unit available in front of the chateau. We look forward to seeing the chateau in its full splendour again!
