In the 18th century, the Czernin family renovated the originally Renaissance chateau near Plzeň to convert it into a modern residence. Today, you can admire its unique interiors furnished with 18th and 19th century furniture. The motif of the guided tour is the flower as it was the most frequent theme used by visual and applied arts in the Baroque era.
Inside the chateau, you will also find paintings with the oldest Central European Baroque still life artwork - large canvases by Gottfried Libalt from the 1660s. The most valuable part of the interior is the original wall paintings by Antonín Tuvora from the end of the 18th century. In the ballroom, fantastic wall and ceiling paintings of a tropical jungle with tall trees cover an area of almost 400 m2. The walls are painted with birds, butterflies and trees, with oriental landscapes in the background.
In the 19th century the chateau was used as a utility building and the 20th century unfortunately witnessed its destruction. Several decades ago it seemed that it could not be saved. Therefore the repair of both the chateau and the surrounding buildings are still ongoing.
