Once upon a time, there was a little town. In that town, there was a house. It was not an ordinary house, though – it was magical. Many creatures lived in it, such as the water spirit ”vodník” with captured souls of drowned men, the bandits of the Blanský Forest and Šumava Forest, a giant or Doctor Faustus and the famous puppet “Kašpárek”.
This unique combination of fairytale creatures can be seen in an exposition of the National Museum placed in the Fairytale House, which presents 300 puppets and marionettes arranged into thematic groups. The oldest puppets date back to the second half of the 18th century. In the attic of the Fairytale house you can learn more about the work of contemporary puppeteers. The museum also contains the original mechanical theatre from 1815. Another attraction is the puppet theatre, where the visitors can play one of the many puppet stories.
