4 squares and 1 courtyard packed with the spirit of Christmas
The Christmas trees in the centre of Brno will be lit up on Friday 22 November from 5 p.m. The entire programme will be accompanied by a story about the Brno dragon, which has also become the symbol of the market: it will form part of a light installation and can be purchased as a plush toy.
The four central squares and one courtyard will be full of life every day. The Christmas markets in Brno will offer a wide variety of handmade gifts, concerts, traditional delicacies and ecological novelties. The festively decked-out náměstí Svobody will welcome you with the aroma of mulled wine, punch and local specialties that evoke the true ambience of Czech Christmas. The market will include 62 stalls selling a range of food and gifts, as well as a large Winter Bar.
Historical carousel and gourmet Christmas
It is only a few steps from náměstí Svobody to the more peaceful Dominikánské náměstí, which will host a wooden nativity scene with more than a hundred life-size figures. Children especially are sure to love the nativity scene, not to mention the Christmas village and the Christmas tram ride.
Traditional Christmas markets will take place at Zelný trh and Moravské náměstí. The picturesque and artisanal Zelný trh will be packed with more than 100 stalls, music every day for the whole family, and a new Children's Village. Folk traditions and the atmosphere of a rural Christmas will come alive there. Children can have fun at the creative workshops, while the adults can enjoy concerts. Moravské náměstí will also feature a stack of straw, a children's historical carousel, a Ferris wheel and an ice-skating rink.
On the way to the famous Zelný trh, stop by the courtyard of the Old Town Hall to try Gourmet Christmas, a food market offering cuisine served up by renowned local restaurants and bistros.
Brno’s Christmas markets put ecology first. Returnable beverage cups will be available, plus vendors are making greater use of local ingredients and sustainable products. This year's markets will also feature the Donate a Cup charity project, which allows you to donate a refundable deposit for a cup for beverages purchased at the markets to one of the charities.
A stroll through Christmas Brno
Christmas Brno - it's not just squares and markets, but also cosy courtyards and cafés that offer a special programme or art and light installations in the streets, churches and courtyards. Several churches will also be opening their door during Advent, such as St. James or St. Mary Magdalene, where you’ll find works of art on display. For some beautiful light and interactive installations, visit Špilberk Castle or the Water Tanks under Žlutý Kopec.
