Brno is the Christmas capital of Europe
Czechia has a city that stands out from all the others in Europe. The country’s second largest city, Brno, is the European Capital of Christmas 2024. The lavishly decorated náměstí Svobody forms the heart of the city’s Advent and Christmas markets. There, visitors can enjoy local specialities, various types of mulled wine and punch, admire handicrafts, or simply soak up the atmosphere by the beautifully decorated Christmas tree. The city centre will also play host to Christmas concerts, theatre performances and children's programmes.
Brno’s Christmas festivities also include the historical Zelný trh, where visitors can see various folk traditions. On top of all this, Brno is also planning a variety of interactive events, including workshops where you can make Christmas decorations, as well as special tours of historical buildings and churches.
Make a wish under the Czech largest lit Christmas tree at the Prague Christmas market!
The Capital without Christmas markets would be like Christmas without carols. The markets take place in several locations in Prague. The most magical Christmas markets take place at the Republic Square, St. Wenceslas Square, the Peace Square or at the Prague Castle. If you want to see the largest Czech Christmas market, go to the Old Town Square, adorned with the largest lit Christmas tree in Czechia until January 6. Let yourself be enchatnted by tha magic of Xmas in Prague!
Fairy-tale Christmas with the aroma of punch
You can get in the holiday mood in Moravia as well. The Advent in Olomouc is a Christmas wonderland. The local square with the column of the plague inscribed by UNESCO is even more beautiful at Christmas. And it will be even more charming after a few sips (or cups) of punch – no other Christmas market in the country offers so many options of this delicious drink. How about going ice-skating at an open-air ice rink? That should not be a problem in Ostrava at Christmas!
Dream of a white Christmas
But let’s go back to Bohemia. You can also enjoy the aroma of mulled wine, mead and gingerbread cookies (and, naturally, the beer) in Plzeň. Take the Christmas tram to the square where the Plzeň market with a rich programme takes place!Carols in the open air, a procession of angels and, above all, unbelievable romance can be experienced in one of the most picturesque towns in Czechia – the Advent in Český Krumlov is an experience to remember. The popular ice rink around Samson's Fountain and the craft alley can be found in the centre of the Advent town in České Budějovice.
And where can you enjoy a truly white Christmas for sure? In Liberec, a North Bohemian town almost in the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains. And if there is no snow, the Liberec Christmas market will not disappoint you with its atmosphere and a rich programme!
