The Sázava River ranks among the most beautiful rivers in Czechia. It flows through picturesque landscapes, ideal for tourists, canoeists, and nature lovers. The river is lined with forests, meadows, cliffs, small cottage settlements, campsites, and pubs that reflect the deep-rooted traditions of canoeing and tramping.
The river offers a variety of stretches – from more challenging rapids suited to experienced paddlers to calmer sections ideal for beginners and families with children. Sázava is popular not only for water sports but also for relaxing cruises, during which you can enjoy the stunning nature and visit numerous tourist attractions. A prominent landmark perched on a rock above the river is Český Šternberk Castle. You can explore the region’s glassmaking tradition at the glassworks in Sázava. And for those interested in delving deeper into the history of Czech canoeing, there is the Canoeing Museum in Zruč nad Sázavou.

Did You Know? The romantic landscape of the Sázava River region was chosen by the creators of the popular video game Kingdom Come: Deliverance as the setting for part of the story. One of the key locations is Rataje nad Sázavou, where you can visit the local chateau, the Rataje Viewpoint offering a stunning view of the Sázava River meander, or Pirkštejn Castle.

Most Beautiful Stretches Of The Sázava

Between Kácov and Český Šternberk, you’ll experience peace and romance. This stretch is ideal for families with children and beginner canoeists. During the trip, you can visit Český Šternberk Castle.
The lower stretch of the Sázava between Týnec nad Sázavou and Pikovice features many scenic rapids and old tramp settlements. It is popular for its picturesque setting and refreshment options along the way. More experienced paddlers will enjoy the lively rapids just before the river joins the Vltava.

16 km
Just 30 kilometres from Prague, you’ll find places that feel like the Wild West from the beloved novels of Karl May. You’ll board your boat just below the weir in Týnec nad Sázavou, which is easily accessible by the special Posázavský Pacifik train from Prague’s Main Station.

About halfway through the journey, at Kamenný Přívoz, we recommend getting out of your boat to visit the Military Museum in Lešany, open from June to September. You can also use the break to get refreshments at one of the riverside pubs with fitting names, such as U Dvou pádel (The Two Paddles), or Restaurace U Hastrmana (The Water Goblin’s Inn).

Next comes a breathtaking section where the Sázava cuts deep into the rocks. You’ll pass by Toronto, Yucatan, or even Old Waikiki – legendary tramp settlements, some of which are accessible only from the water. If you’re after an authentic experience, stop “for a quick one” at the tramps’ Starcova hospoda (Old Man’s Pub). At the end of your trip, you’ll return your gear and can take the Posázavský Pacifik train back upriver to Týnec nad Sázavou.
