Hradec Králové is a city where you can visit a number of monuments of modern architecture, but also try out our two tips for the area – in Třebechovice pod Orebem and near Villa Mazura, both of which are suitable for family trips.
In Třebechovice pod Orebem there is a unique Museum of Nativity Scenes, and in the nearby Villa Mazura you will find a marked trail where you will see original fairy-tale characters. The beginning of the Fairytale Trail is at Villa Mazura, which is about half an hour by car from the centre of Hradec Králové. The wooden building already stood here 250 years ago, and its surroundings are classified as sites of European importance. In 2002 it was declared a nature reserve. The cottage is a sought-after and popular excursion stop located on the main cycle routes leading from the nearby city of Hradec Králové. Along the trail, you will see hand-carved statues of fairy-tale characters such as the dragon Větvička, the magician Šišula and the blueberry fairy. The route, which is approximately 2.5 km long, winds from Villa Mazura and ends at the Výskyt pond. You are free to use the public firepit at the beginning and end of the Fairytale Trail.
Ten kilometres northeast of Villa Mazura is the unique Třebechovice Museum of Nativity Scenes, which features more than 400 nativity scenes in its collections. The most valuable and most admired is the unique seven-metre Provost's Nativity Scene, which is on the list of National Cultural Monuments. This original work of art was created more than a hundred years ago and contains almost 2,000 carvings and 350 miniatures. About 200 figurines move along or ride on special conveyor belts.
