The castle from the middle of the 13th century belongs among the oldest castles of the Vítkovci family, the predecessors of the one of the most powerful Bohemian aristocratic families – the Rožmberks – who, after the king, used to be in the most powerful positions in the country. Despite a number of learned and venturesome feudal lords, apparently the most popular family figure is Perchta of Rožmberk, who, as legend has it, has been walking around the family residences as a mournful ghost since her death.
Why visit?
The most splendid view of the huge medieval castle and the romantic countryside of Southern Bohemia opens to you from the English Tower. But you must climb more than 200 steps.
