One of the most charming wine-cellar colonies. An oasis of peace and a world unto itself. Discover it for yourself, preferably with a glass of the excellent local Traminer (Tramín), Müller-Thurgau or Pinot Noir (Rulandské modré).
Written records about the winemaking village of Vlkoš date back to the 12th century. It is said that Vlkoš was one of the wealthiest and most progressive communities in the region. A short distance from the village, below the vineyard-adorned mountain Achtel, arose a cluster of 170 wineries. Many of them remain beautiful examples of vernacular architecture. Life here is bubbling at any season or hour. It is part of the local custom that after a funeral in the local cemetery, the women turn right to go to their homes, and the men turn left to the wine cellars. Here they would recount the good deeds of the deceased and drink to his memory before heading back home, reconciled with the cycle of life. When you visit here, the friendliness of the local winemakers may surprise you a bit, but an evening spent in the company of their distinctive humour and especially their wines is an unforgettable experience. That’s how it has always been here, and that’s how it will always be.
