The New Generation Museum in Žďár nad Sázavou
Follow the journey that the Žďár nad Sázavou Chateau has taken over the course of the last 800 years – from a monastery to a sumptuous estate. One of the most modern museums in the Czech Republic will be your guide.

The whole story of the estate began as early as the mid 13th century when Cistercian monks founded a monastery in the depths of the Žďár forest. The 18th century brought a new direction and dynamism, and also the work of the then abbot who, along with a genius of those times – the architect Jan Blažej Santini Aichel, breathed new life into the area. Following the abbot’s directions, Santini created his masterpiece, the Pilgrimage Church of St John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora, a UNESCO-listed monument.

Another significant milestone came about in 1784 when the monastery closed down, and was gradually converted into a chateau. The Žďár Chateau was returned to the noble Kinský family in the 1990s.Some other important turning points occurred at the turn of the new millennium. Currently, new exhibitions are being prepared in the New Generation Museum. They combine hands-on experience with exhibits from significant Czech institutions. You will therefore experience history in a way as never before. In the New Generation Museum in Žďár nad Sázavou history is combined with creativity, nature and life.
