Christmas without a lit Christmas tree is almost unthinkable in the Czech Republic these days. However, nativity scenes were built in families long before trees were decorated at Christmas about 150 years ago for the first time. Before Christmas, a model of the Bethlehem manger, where Jesus Christ was born according to the Bible, is built.
This tradition in Třešť near Jihlava is presented to visitors by the exposition of nativity scenes in Schumpeter‘s house, where you can see several large nativity scenes. One of the unique exhibits is Brožek’s nativity scene, which takes up an area of 30 square metres, and a nativity scene that is being created at a wood-carving festival, Woodcarving. Every year, new figures are added and today there are more than 650 of them.
The basic components of Třešť nativity scenes include a central place of the birth of Baby Jesus, a city and a landscape with trees, small structures of farmsteads and chalets created from wood and moss by the woodcarver.
