"Volatile and whimsical fashion occurs in each season in a new shape. Today I compare it to a butterfly eating sweet from all flowers and choosing the best." The quotation of a redactor of the fashion magazine Nová moda from 1918 had inspired the curators of the Ethnographic Institute / Moravian Museum who prepared the exhibition with the title "Like a Rose. Fashion as a Mirror of the Time".
Similarly to the butterfly the curators tried to choose to best from the extensive textile collections of their institution; the present to visitors the evolution of mainly ladies’ urban wear in the period 1800-1925 and circumstances that played a crucial role in its modifications.
The exhibition shows representative dresses made from expensive fabrics from the late 19th century and the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, garments with pigeon front bodice from the first decade of the 20th century, sober variable outfits from the time of WWI as well as dresses with lowered waist typical for the 1920s.
There are also men’s and children’ swear as well as traditional costumes of the inhabitants of Brno rural areas. On display are also numerous fashion accessories, shoes and underwear.
