Ferdinand Porsche, a visionary behind iconic cars such as the Volkswagen Beetle and Porsche 911, left an indelible mark on the automotive industry with his groundbreaking ideas and innovative designs. His name has become synonymous with performance and elegance. Born in the small town of Vratislavice nad Nisou near Liberec, his legacy can still be felt there, despite spending most of his professional life elsewhere.
The Birthplace Where It All Began
Ferdinand Porsche was born into a German-speaking family in the village of Vratislavice nad Nisou near Liberec in northern Bohemia in 1875. His birthplace has been transformed into a museum that offers visitors a glimpse into his life and work.
His fascination with engineering eventually led him to Vienna, where he worked for Jacob Lohner & Co. Interestingly, his first major project was a hybrid electric vehicle! At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, he contributed to the development of the Lohner-Porsche, one of the world’s first hybrid cars.

Innovator and Visionary
Porsche was one of the most talented designers and engineers of his time, paving the way for innovations no one had dared to pursue before. He invented new engine designs and car concepts that were revolutionary for their era.In 2025, we commemorate the 150th anniversary of Ferdinand Porsche’s birth. He also focused on constructing and improving racing vehicles, introducing innovations such as the world’s first all-wheel-drive race car. Modern automobiles still rely on many ideas initially conceived by Porsche and refined by subsequent engineers.

In 1931, Porsche founded his own design office in Stuttgart, where the legendary Volkswagen Beetle was born. It became one of the best-selling cars of all time. However, not everything was sunshine and roses. Before World War II, Ferdinand Porsche was an active member of the Nazi Party and contributed to the development of some Nazi weapons. After the war, he expressed regret for his involvement, but he was unable to regain the momentum of his pre-war activities.He passed away in Germany in 1951 at the age of 75.
