On the occasion of the celebrations of the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia, a selection of paintings from Alfons Mucha’s Slav Epic will be available for viewing at the Municipal House in Prague. The Slav Epic is a cycle of large-scale paintings, in which Alfons Mucha has depicted the history of Czechs and other Slavic peoples. After it was completed, Mucha donated it to the city of Prague, which was supposed to construct a separate and dignified location for this monumental collection.
The entire set of paintings known as the Slav Epic took the artist nearly two decades to finish. Mucha finished his work in the spring of 1928. The work as a whole was first exhibited in 1928 at the Trade Fair Palace in Prague. During the Nazi occupation, it was hidden from the Nazis. Following its rediscovery after the Second World War, it was displayed from 1963 in at the château in Moravský Krumlov. In 2017, the works were lent to Tokyo, from where they returned during that same year.
