Charles IV was a well-educated, pious, strong-minded and judicious ruler, he was also a ruthless strategist and experienced diplomat. Find out more about him at the exhibition prepared in cooperation between Czech and German experts. Discover the strengths and weaknesses of the greatest sovereign in the history of the Czech Lands. Learn how he managed, during a time of poor harvests, plagues, Jewish pogroms and a financial crisis, to build impressive buildings in Prague and other locations, which have been admired by visitors from all over the world ever since.
The exhibition held at the Waldstein Riding School near the Prague Castle seeks to present the life of Charles IV devoid of prejudice, legend and myth. With over 170 exhibits from more than a hundred European and American collections, the exhibition brings to life the time when he lived and tells us about the challenges he and his people had to face. You will learn about the relationship between the emperor and his subjects and how he was perceived by them. The exhibition is organised by the National Gallery in Prague and The House of Bavarian History in cooperation with the Leipzig University Centre for the History and Culture of East Central Europe.
