National Museum to reopen in October 2018
The reopening of the National Museum’s main building is planned for October 2018 as part of celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic and the 200th anniversary of the founding of the National Museum.
Following the opening, the sheltered courtyard situated on the right hand side of the building will house a permanent exhibition of suspended large-scale exhibits or precious statues and monuments from the museum’s collections. On the ground floor, there will be five exhibition halls with an overall area of over 1,000 m2 housing short-term exhibitions and restored lecture halls.

The pantheon situated on the first floor will, just as it did before the reconstruction, serve to commemorate the great men and women of Czech science, social life and art. The visitors will find the first part of the new permanent exhibition in the floor’s other exhibition halls. There will be an interactive centre for students and young people located in the pillared hall on the second floor. At the end of the tour, it will be possible to climb up to the dome which will offer the visitors a panorama view of the historical centre of Prague and Prague Castle.

New elevators will carry the visitors to the second underground floor, to the representative connecting passage with multimedia effects. The corridor leads to the neighbouring National Museum building. Here they will find the second part of the permanent exhibition. The area will also host other exhibitions, concerts and cultural events.

Apart from museum exhibits, the project also includes leisure areas, activity rooms for school visits, storage spaces for strollers, children’s play areas, a café and a souvenir shop. It goes without saying that the building will be barrier-free.

No significant reconstruction work has been carried out in the National Museum’s building since its opening. It was also damaged by military operations in 1945 and 1968. The reconstruction of this exceptional building was necessary since it would otherwise have to be closed down due to safety concerns. The goal of the demanding reconstruction was thus to save this important national cultural monument and transform it into a modern museum.
