The celebration recalls the year 1327 when Czech King John of Luxembourg and his wife Elisabeth of Bohemia and the royal court arrived in Znojmo. The full program offers a number of supporting events: theater performances, concerts, fireworks, jousting tournaments, historic marketplace with demonstrations of crafts, and a military camp. The culmination of the celebration is a festive parade through the city, which of course is never missed by that favorite of visitors to Znojmo’s historic vintage, the god of wine and good cheer Bacchus. Blazing torches add atmosphere to Friday’s procession, and Saturday afternoon peaks on the grandstand with the transfer of the city charter and punishment of rogue winemakers.
